Derwin Butler
(Uncle"D")
Bass Guitar, Vocals
As a boy, Derwin always loved to listen to live music. When he was in 6th grade, Uncle Lance Koyama entered into his life. Uncle Lance played Hawaiian music at his house with some local boys that were in the Navy at that time. It seemed like they were there all the time. Derwin started to learn small kine slack key. Each time he would learn a new riff. Eventually he could play a few songs. Later his brother Randy and he formed a small band, called "The Little Hawaiian Band From San Diego".
They would play at parties or with Uncles and Aunties when requested. Every chance they could get together, Our family played and sang Hawaiian music. Uncle Lance would have us practice till all hours of the night.
The Bass is now Derwin's instrument of choice. He plays and sings in the Church Praise Band, giving the Lord all the Glory.
Other Hawaiian bands that Derwin has been a member of are; Kalani Kai and Sands. In 2007, Derwin joined Ohana Plus, where he continues to learn and appreciate his Hawaiian culture through music and "kanikapila".
"I pray and hope to be Playing with my bruddah's, Clint and Greg Helenihi, and Joe Iosefa for the rest of my days."
